Stepping up for pets and their whānau
Southern Cross Pet Insurance + Pet Refuge strengthen their partnership
Southern Cross Healthy Futures research shows the rising cost of living is the number one concern for New Zealanders1, along with issues like increasing violence2 and mental health3. Sadly, there very real family struggles behind this research and more and more people are turning to organisations like Pet Refuge.
Pet Refuge founder Julie Chapman says, “Pet Refuge provides temporary shelter and care for pets affected by domestic violence, keeping them safe while their owners escape abuse. We’re very grateful that Southern Cross Pet Insurance has extended their support to become a Cornerstone Partner. This support is vital and will make a huge difference to our work. The need is great - since we opened in July 2021, we have helped over 300 families escape abuse and are currently full.”
SCPI CEO Anthony McPhail, says, “We’re on a mission at SCPI to help New Zealand pets live their best lives and sometimes some really sad things get in the way of this – for example, where pets live in homes with owners who find it tough to escape domestic violence or abuse.
“SCPI is right in behind Pet Refuge which has so far provided 25,442 safe nights to pets affected by family violence. We’re delighted to have extended our relationship to be a cornerstone partner which means we can help the Pet Refuge team develop their facilities and their team to help more New Zealanders and their pets.”
The Southern Cross team is committed to supporting the work Pet Refuge does in the community. The cornerstone partnership is well underway and will soon see more families being helped as they look to a brighter future.
